What is Vitamin B12?

Vitamin B12 is the collective name for the cobalamins; cyanocobalamin is the best-characterized form. The molecule is built around a corrin ring: a macrocyclic tetrapyrrole system in which four nitrogen atoms equatorially coordinate to a cobalt(III) ion. This upper axial position forms a direct cobalt-carbon bond, making cyanocobalamin one of the few naturally occurring organometallic compounds.
