Description
What is Hyaluronic Acid?
Hyaluronic acid is a linear glycosaminoglycan composed of repeating units of D-glucuronic acid and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine. Unlike most glycosaminoglycans, it is not sulfated and is not bound to a protein core. This product is supplied as 1 ml pre-filled syringe with 5 mg hyaluronic acid in solution, so 5 mg/ml, with a Luer-lock connection and without a needle. Nothing needs to be reconstituted or diluted.
Hyaluronic acid is a major component of the extracellular matrix and binds to the CD44 and RHAMM receptors. The chain binds large amounts of water, making the substance also a model compound for research into the viscoelasticity of matrix solutions. At 5 mg/ml, it concerns a non-crosslinked, low-viscosity solution – a different material class from the crosslinked gels of 20 mg/ml and higher.
What is Hyaluronic Acid being researched for?
Within controlled research environments, hyaluronic acid is used in, among other things:
- Receptor binding: interaction with the CD44 and RHAMM receptors.
- Matrix models: the role in the formation of the extracellular matrix in cell culture.
- Rheology: Viscoelastic behavior of solutions at different chain lengths and concentrations.
- Enzymatic degradation: fragmentation by hyaluronidase and the activity of the fragments.
- Carrier function: use as a liquid matrix for other compounds in compound solutions.
- Analytical reference: Calibration substance for glycosaminoglycan analysis.
It is important to emphasize that these applications take place exclusively within controlled research environments and that hyaluronic acid is the subject of scientific research.
