Description
Hexarelin is a synthetic hexapeptide from the GHRP family, with the international generic name examorelin. In scientific research, it is studied as a model compound for the ghrelin receptor and as a reference in comparative receptor research. The compound is offered as a freeze-dried powder of 10 mg per vial, exclusively for laboratory and research purposes.
What is Hexarelin?
Hexarelin consists of six amino acids in the sequence His-D-2-methyl-Trp-Ala-Trp-D-Phe-Lys-NH2Two features determine the behavior of this molecule. At position two, a D-amino acid with a methyl group is attached to the indole ring of tryptophan, and at position six, an amidated lysine closes the chain. Both modifications limit the binding sites for peptidases, making the peptide more manageable in a laboratory setting than a chain consisting entirely of L-amino acids. With a molecular weight of 887.0 Da, Hexarelin belongs to the small synthetic peptides.
In research models, Hexarelin binds to the growth hormone secretagogue receptor GHS-R1a, the receptor that also recognizes ghrelin. Consequently, the compound falls into the same mechanistic group as GHRP-6, GHRP-2 and Ipamorelin, and not in the group of GHRH analogues, which target a different receptor.
In addition, Hexarelin has a second described binding partner, which makes it a unique research model within this group. In 2002, Bodart and colleagues identified the scavenger receptor CD36 as the cardiac binding site for Hexarelin in Circulation Research. In 2004, Demers and colleagues traced the binding site back to the CD36 segment Asn132 to Glu177 using photoaffinity crosslinking, with Met169 as the key contact residue. CD36 is a membrane glycoprotein. For researchers, this second binding site is the reason to compare Hexarelin with the other GHRPs when receptor selectivity is the subject.
Research areas
In a laboratory context, Hexarelin occurs in the following research areas, among others:
- Binding and selectivity studies of the ghrelin receptor GHS-R1a in cell models and membrane preparations in vitro.
- Research into binding to the scavenger receptor CD36 and the role of the segment Asn132 to Glu177 therein.
- Comparative receptor research among the GHRPs, in which sequence differences are related to binding affinity.
- Structure-activity research on D-amino acid substitutions and C-terminal amidation in short peptides.
- Stability study of proteolytic degradation of modified hexapeptides.
- Analytical method development and validation (RP-HPLC, LC-MS) with Hexarelin as the peptide reference standard.
Each of these applications involves controlled laboratory or preclinical model research.

Reconstitution: from 10 mg to unit concentration
The vial contains 10 mg of freeze-dried powder. In a laboratory setup, this is dissolved with a solvent, usually bacteriostatic water. The volume added determines the concentration. The amount of substance in the vial remains 10 mg, regardless of how much water is added.
A U-100 type insulin syringe has 100 units per milliliter, so one unit is 0.01 ml. For this vial, that gives:
| Added volume | Concentration | Per 1 unit (0.01 ml) | Per 10 units (0.1 ml) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 ml | 10 mg/ml | 100 mcg | 1 mg |
| 2 ml | 5 mg/ml | 50 mcg | 0.5 mg |
| 3 ml | 3.33 mg/ml | 33 mcg | 0.33 mg |
Our peptide calculator calculates other combinations of vial strength and volume. The table concerns the relationship between volume and concentration. We do not provide dosage advice and do not publish a schedule.
Shape, handling and storage
Hexarelin is supplied as a white to off-white freeze-dried powder in a glass vial with a rubber stopper and aluminium seal. In dry condition, this peptide is significantly more stable than in solution. Store the unopened vial in a cool, dark place, protected from light and moisture, preferably in the original packaging. After reconstitution, the solution should be stored refrigerated at 2 to 8 °C and protected from light. The two tryptophan residues in the sequence are oxidation-sensitive, making protection from light and oxygen particularly relevant for this peptide.
Observe the usual laboratory precautions: work in a clean environment, use suitable personal protective equipment, and prevent cross-contamination with other research materials. Keep the packaging out of reach of unauthorized persons.
Purity and lab results
Each batch is externally tested for identity and purity; the test reports appear per test round on our lab results page.
Frequently Asked Questions
To which substance class does Hexarelin belong?
A synthetic hexapeptide from the GHRP family, with a methylated D-tryptophan at position two and an amidated C-terminal lysine. It is classified as a growth hormone secretagogue.
How does Hexarelin differ from the other GHRPs?
All GHRPs bind GHS-R1a. For Hexarelin, binding to the scavenger receptor CD36 has also been described, making it a separate research model within this group.
Is Hexarelin the same as a GHRH analogue?
No. GHRH analogues such as tesamorelin and sermorelin bind to the GHRH receptor. Hexarelin binds to the ghrelin receptor. They are two different sites of action on the same axis.
In what form is the compound supplied?
As freeze-dried powder of 10 mg in a sealed vial.
How do I store the vial?
Chilled and dark, protected from light and moisture. After reconstitution, refrigerated at 2 to 8 °C.
