Vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin) is a cobalt-containing corrinoid coordination complex (C63H88CoN14O14P, approximately 1355.4 g/mol) with a central cobalt(III) ion in a macrocyclic corrin ring and a direct cobalt-carbon bond. In scientific research, it is studied as a model compound in coordination chemistry and analytical work. Intended exclusively for laboratory and research purposes; not for human or animal use. Not a medicinal product.

Description

What is Vitamin B12?

Vitamin B12 is the collective name for the cobalamins; cyanocobalamin is the best-characterized form. It is not a peptide but a cobalt-containing corrinoid coordination complex, CAS number 68-19-9, with the molecular formula C63H88CoN14O14P and a molecular mass of approximately 1355.4 g/mol. The molecule is built around a corrin ring: a macrocyclic tetrapyrrole system in which four nitrogen atoms equatorially coordinate to a cobalt(III) ion. Below the ring face, a 5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole group is axially bound to the metal center via a nucleotide arm; above the ring face, a cyanide group occupies the sixth coordination site. This upper axial position forms a direct cobalt-carbon bond, making cyanocobalamin one of the few naturally occurring organometallic compounds. The material is supplied as a solution containing 10 mg of cyanocobalamin in a sealed vial with a closure cap.

The cobalt-corrine chromophore gives the complex its characteristic dark red to carmine red color and a sharply defined UV-Vis absorption pattern. In addition, the cobalt-carbon bond is highly photosensitive: under illumination, it splits, after which the axial groups at the metal center switch and the oxidation state of the cobalt changes. This combination of a highly absorbing chromophore and readily measurable photolability makes cyanocobalamin a classic example in spectrophotometric and chromatographic work: the color change and the shift of the absorption bands are immediately visible, making the complex a valuable model compound for testing detection settings, light protection of samples, and the sensitivity of a method to degradation products.

Applications in a laboratory context

Within coordination chemistry and analytical work, Vitamin B12 occurs in the following in vitro research areas, among others:

  • Structure-property research to the contribution of the axial groups above and below the annular surface to the conformation and stability of the complex.
  • Coordination chemical analysis to the bond geometry of cobalt(III) within macrocyclic corrinoid systems and to exchange at both axial positions.
  • Stability and photolability studies in which the cleavage of the cobalt-carbon bond and the associated change in oxidation state are monitored under controlled light and oxidation conditions.
  • Analytical method development and validation (HPLC, LC-MS, UV-Vis spectrophotometry) where cyanocobalamin serves as the reference standard for retention time, mass identity, and absorption profile.

Shape, handling and storage

The material is supplied as a solution in a sealed vial with a closure cap. The dark red to carmine red color results from the cobalt-corrine chromophore and is a normal characteristic of the compound, not an indication of quality or defect. Because the complex is highly photosensitive, protection against light requires special attention: work as much as possible with shielded sample containers and do not leave the vial exposed to unnecessary light.

Store the vial refrigerated at 2–8 °C, in a dark, closed, and upright position, in the original packaging. Observe the usual laboratory precautions: work in a clean environment, use appropriate personal protective equipment, prevent cross-contamination with other examination materials, and dispose of residual material in accordance with applicable laboratory guidelines.

Analytical quality

In analytical work on corrinoids, identity and purity are determining parameters: cobalamins are sensitive to light and oxidation, and degradation products or synthesis impurities can distort the interpretation of measurement results, especially when the coordination around the central ion itself is part of the measurement. Our Vitamin B12 is supplied with a purity of ≥ 99%, determined by HPLC analysis in accordance with the accompanying certificate of analysis. The available certificates of analysis can be viewed on our website. lab results page.
