Why 80% and not higher?
80% ethanol is more effective than 95-100% because the water fraction is needed for penetration of bacterial cell walls. Pure ethanol evaporates too quickly and denaturates proteins superficially without complete cell death.
Can this also be applied to the skin?
The product is formulated for surface and material disinfection. It can be used in a research context for hand disinfection during aseptic work, but it is not registered as a hand disinfectant for clinical use.
Which microbes are eliminated?
80% ethanol effectively eliminates most vegetative bacteria, fungi, and enveloped viruses. Spores (such as Clostridium or Bacillus) are resistant and require alternative disinfection methods.
